Copying the Masters

“You have to copy and recopy the masters, and it’s only after having proved oneself as a good copyist that you can reasonably try to do a still life of a radish.”  – Degas

I decided recently to take heed of Degas’ advice (above) and to attempt a copy of John Singer Sargeant’s ‘Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose’. The painting is to be a gift to my fiance Dominika.
Here you can see the very early stages of drawing out the picture. I have used a dark ground which i understand was favored by Sargeant.
