A bit of progress.
I didn’t do much of an under-painting as I think that Sargent painted this ‘a la prima’. So, as you can see, I have pretty much just started with colour.
Sargent painted his painting over a long time. He painted outdoors, from life, for only a few minutes each evening when the light was just perfect. Capturing this exact, perfect moment as day turned to evening, was Sargent’s goal. I don’t suppose that my version will even come close to the beauty and subtlety of the light that Sargent captured in the original.
I of course, am working from reproductions of Sargents painting. My painting is much smaller than Sargent’s; the original is almost two metres in height; mine is less than a metre.
